What is circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin (the skin
covering the tip of the penis). It is commonly performed for cultural, religious, or medical
reasons.

What are the steps before procedure?

1. 1. Consultation
- A full medical assessment of your infant will be done.
- The doctor will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and obtain your written
consent.
2. 2. Fasting
- Usually not required for healthy, full-term infants undergoing circumcision under local
anesthesia.

3. 3. Hygiene
- Bathe your baby on the morning of the procedure.
- Ensure the diaper area is clean.
4. 4. Medications
- Inform the doctor of any medications your baby is taking, including vitamins or herbal
supplements.
- Do not give any medication unless advised by the doctor.

What happens on the day of the procedure?

On the Day of the Procedure
- Bring a clean change of clothes and extra diapers.
- Bring a feeding bottle if your baby is bottle-fed.

- Arrive at the facility on time as instructed.

During the procedure?

- Your baby will receive a local anesthetic to minimize pain.
- The procedure typically takes 10–20 minutes.
- You may be asked to wait in a separate area during the procedure.

After the procedure?

- Your baby will be monitored briefly after the circumcision.
- You will be given instructions for wound care, signs of infection, and pain management.
- You may breastfeed or feed your baby once they are fully alert.

Expected Post-Procedure Reactions

- Mild swelling, redness, and a small amount of blood are normal.
- Yellowish crust may form during healing — this is normal.
- Healing usually takes 5–10 days.

When to Call the Doctor

Call your doctor or return to the clinic if you notice:
- Excessive bleeding
- Signs of infection (pus, increasing redness, swelling, or fever)
- Difficulty urinating after 12 hours
- Persistent crying or signs of severe pain
